The Project
DP World London Gateway is a port within the wider Port of London, United Kingdom. Opened in November 2013, the site is a fully integrated logistics facility, comprising a semi-automated, deep-sea container terminal on the same site as the UK’s largest land bank for the development of warehousing, distribution facilities, and ancillary logistics services.
Our Work
This project was demanding in terms of timeframe, the need for pavement durability and longevity, plus the poor bearing capacity of the ground.
Access to the port and its allied distribution centre required carriageways of asphalt to last a minimum of a decade without maintenance, despite heavy use.
Surfacing the main port access road, a new construction that now connects Sorrells roundabout with the port and roundabout. The new port road provides access to the docks and the business park, allowing greater traffic capacity.
Toppesfield were able to mobilise within a week to ensure the construction of 62,000 m2 of new road was delivered to the tight timeframe, ready for the first ship to dock. Laying over 46,000 tonnes, consisting of HDM base and binder, and a thin surface course system. Working in collaboration with the client and supply chain to specifically design product for the project.
